Heading Back

Harnett, Sampson, and Lee county schools are joining 26 other North Carolina districts in setting school calendars that defy a state law designed to boost tourism by keeping more of August available for travel. Educators say they decided to break the law to benefit students by allowing them to complete the semester before the winter break.  “Our decision to start the school year earlier is driven by our belief in the potential benefits it can bring,” stated Harnett County Schools Superintendent Dr. Aaron Fleming. “We believe this change will benefit our students by reducing learning loss, providing balanced semesters, and addressing the needs of our stakeholders.”  Students in Harnett and Lee counties will return to class on August 14, which is 11 days earlier than the state law allows. Sampson County Schools will resume classes on August 19, seven days before Johnston County students, who return on August 26.
