Carjacking In Clayton

On January 11th at approximately 3:12 pm, deputies responded to the area of 316 Polenta Rd, Clayton NC in what was called in as a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian. Upon the arrival of deputies, a male and female in their late 60’s and 70’s were located in  the roadway with apparent injuries. Also at the incident location was a black GMC vehicle. Deputies identified the victims as Helmut Mossig and Ulrike Mossig from Cheraw, South Carolina. The victims stated they were driving on Polenta Rd. in their 2018 Ford Edge when they observed a black GMC vehicle in the roadway. Victims stated there was a white male in his 20’s, standing outside of the vehicle flagging them down. Victims stated the male seemed to be in distress so they stopped to see if they could help. Victims stated after stopping the male subject ran up to their vehicle and ordered them to get out of the vehicle. Victims stated the male then forcefully removed them both from their vehicle resulting in minor injuries to both victims. The suspect male then sped off with their vehicle.  Deputies determined the black GMC vehicle had been reported stolen from Raleigh, NC. Both victims were taken to Wake Med where they were treated for their injuries.

Soon after the carjacking, deputies were able to locate the victim’s stolen vehicle on Cleveland Rd. in Johnston County. The vehicle was being driven by a white male. Deputies attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver refused to stop leading deputies on a chase.  Deputies lost sight of the vehicle but soon with the assistance of Clayton PD, were able to again locate the vehicle on US Hwy 70 W resulting in another vehicle pursuit which ended in the public vehicular area of Pine Hollow Golf Club located at 3300 Garner Rd. Donald Avery Banks, a 20 year old white male from Cary, NC was identified as the operator of the vehicle stolen from the Mossig’s.  Donald Avery Banks was charged with Larceny of Motor Vehicle, Flee to Elude Arrest with a Motor Vehicle, Common Law Robbery, Assault With a Deadly Weapon, Reckless Driving Wanton Disregard, Speeding and Resisting a Public Officer. Bank’s was held at the Johnston County Jail under a $250,000 secure bond.
