Bridge Replacement Progressing Faster Than Planned
Great news for drivers in Johnston County! The NC Department of Transportation has announced that the project to replace the bridge on NC Highway 210 near Smithfield is progressing faster than planned. The $3.2 million project, led by contractor S.T. Wooten, involves replacing the aging two-lane bridge over Middle Creek, originally constructed during the Great Depression. Though the roadway closed in June 2024 for demolition, the new bridge is now largely complete, with crews focusing on finishing touches like road grading and drainage ditches. Despite recent rainy weather, the project remains ahead of schedule, with an anticipated opening of the road and new bridge by May or June 2025.
