Harnett County Schools Testing New Cell Phone Policy

Harnett County Schools is rolling out a bold new initiative aimed at curbing cellphone use in classrooms. The district is testing lockable pouches at Western Harnett High, Star Academy, and Highland Middle School. These pouches will block access to phone screens during the school day, though students can still carry their devices. At day’s end, students can unlock the pouches at designated stations. If a pouch is forgotten, phones must be handed over to the principal’s office. The move aims to minimize distractions, and parents are advised to contact the school receptionist for emergencies. The pilot could pave the way for a districtwide policy.
