In a pursuit Monday night in Johnston County, a high-speed chase unfolded after a deputy attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle in Benson. The driver initiated a desperate escape, refusing to halt and leading authorities onto Interstate 95. After officers deployed stop sticks near Smithfield, the suspect’s pickup lost a tire but continued, veering off at US 70, tumbling down an embankment, and ultimately, the driver fled on foot into the woods. Despite an extensive search with two K-9 teams, he remains at large. Found inside the vehicle were a firearm and drug paraphernalia. The elusive driver now faces a multitude of pending charges once apprehended.
