A Selma police officer, identified as Joseph Atkinson, has been dismissed from his role after an intensive internal probe, confirmed Police Chief Jamie Hughes. The decision, made on October 21, follows a contentious incident involving Atkinson during a traffic stop on September 19, which was recorded and widely shared on social media by Matthew Sanders, the motorist involved. Despite allegations from Sanders that Atkinson deleted a video of the stop, the investigation did not conclusively prove this claim. Nonetheless, further inquiries led to Atkinson’s termination. Sanders, cited for multiple violations during the stop, will face these charges in court next month.
