Tattoo Gives Away Burglar

After nearly three years of uncertainty, Smithfield Police have closed a 2022 burglary case thanks to a crucial piece of evidence—a unique tattoo. On July 21, 2022, a Smithfield woman’s purse was stolen from inside her N. Third Street home while she stepped out briefly to warm her car. Security footage captured the thief, but his face remained unclear. Detectives re-examined the case after Antoine Deccarius Sherwood Monk, 47, was recently arrested on unrelated charges; his distinctive tattoo matched the culprit’s in the footage. Monk now faces charges of first-degree burglary and larceny after his arrest on May 14, 2025.
