A tragic crash in Harnett County has left an 18-year-old driver dead after their car overturned into a pond near the intersection of Norrington Road and Avery Road, just west of Lillington. Authorities say the incident occurred around 2:45 a.m., when the vehicle struck a tree, ascended an embankment and ultimately landed in the water. It took more than 12 hours for the teen’s family to locate the submerged car using the teen’s cell phone location. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reports the car was traveling at an estimated speed of at least 80 miles per hour prior to the accident.
