Widening Project Hits Milestone
After five years of construction, the Interstate 40 widening project in Wake and Johnston counties has finally reached a major milestone, with all lanes now open to traffic. This development promises to significantly ease congestion along the 13-mile stretch south of Raleigh, a critical artery for Triangle commuters. The project, initiated in 2018, not only widened the highway but also included the overhaul of several bridges and the creation of a more efficient interchange at Exit 312B. While the major lanes are open, minor finishing touches like signage and reflective markers are expected to continue, with completion targeted by year’s end.
