Scam Victims

In a concerning turn of events in Johnston County, a 67-year-old man fell victim to a sophisticated scam, losing $19,000 to fraudsters posing as Amazon employees. The scammers convinced him that a package linked to his name containing illegal narcotics had been seized, and that his identity was stolen for opening multiple bank accounts. Tricked into believing he was rectifying the situation, the victim deposited his money into a Bitcoin machine. In a similar deceit in Clayton, a 64-year-old woman lost over $10,000 after a scammer, who claimed a mutual friend died, gained access to her bank account through social media. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant about such scams.
